As professional organizers, we often remind clients, the goal isn’t just to tidy what you already own. You also want to be more mindful of what items you bring into your home.

One of the most overlooked tools for preventing clutter isn’t a drawer divider or a label maker. It’s your local library.

Did you know that local libraries lend far more than books? They offer access to items you may only need occasionally, which helps you reduce purchases, save space, and maintain a more intentional home.

Here are some ways your library can support your organizing goals.

1. Stop Building a “Single Read” Library at Home

Books are one of the most common categories we tend to over-accumulate.

Instead of purchasing every title that catches your interest, borrow it first. Many library systems also provide digital access to eBooks and audiobooks, which means zero physical storage and zero cost.

If you truly love a book and reference it repeatedly, you can always purchase it later with confidence. Borrowing first prevents shelves from overflowing with costly one-time reads.

2. Borrow Specialty Tools Instead of Buying

Many libraries now offer a “Library of Things,” which may include items like:

  • Voltage testers
  • Stud finders
  • Tire inflators
  • Laser levels
  • Radon detectors (*40-45% of homes in IL have radon levels above EPA guidelines!)

If you’re organizing your garage or utility closet, you’ll find that many tools are bulky and take up a lot of prime real estate. Ask yourself: How often do I actually use this? Owning fewer rarely-used tools means less to store, maintain, and organize.

3. Rotate Entertainment Instead of Storing It

Games can quickly overtake cabinets and media units. Borrowing entertainment items allows you to enjoy something new while avoiding long-term storage. The library has many fun items like:

  • Board games
  • Puzzles
  • Croquet
  • Outdoor games
  • Video games and accessories

This is especially helpful for families. Children’s interests change quickly, and entertainment clutter accumulates fast. Rotation keeps your home lighter and more manageable.

4. Test Hobbies Before Committing to the Equipment

One common organizing challenge is abandoned hobbies. In our new-found enthusiasm, we can overbuy, and these unnecessary items can quickly become storage burdens.

Many libraries now provide access to:

  • 3D printers
  • Crafting equipment
  • Sewing machines
  • Photography gear
  • Cricut machines

Before investing in equipment that requires permanent storage space, consider borrowing or using shared resources. If the hobby sticks, you can make a thoughtful purchase. If not, you’ve avoided adding clutter to your home.

5. Borrow for Temporary Needs

Organizing often reveals items that were purchased for one-time events:

  • Karaoke machines
  • Projectors and screens
  • Blu-ray players
  • Hand trucks

Your library may already have what you need for short-term use. Borrowing prevents “event leftovers” from lingering in closets long after they’re needed, and keeps more money in your pocket.

6. Shift from Ownership to Access

Decluttering isn’t just about what you remove—it’s about what you decide not to bring in.

Libraries support a powerful mindset shift: You don’t need to own something to benefit from it.

When you begin asking, “Can I borrow this?” instead of “Where will I store this?” you reduce incoming volume dramatically. That single habit can make organizing exponentially easier.

A Practical Next Step for Your Decluttering Plan

If you’re actively organizing your home, try this strategy:

  1. Identify one clutter-prone category (books, tools, games, craft supplies).
  2. Commit to borrowing instead of buying in that category for the next 90 days.
  3. Notice how much less enters your home.

Prevention is far easier than purging, and as an added perk, you’ll save money too!

Your library card may be one of the most amazing decluttering tools you own, and bonus- it’s free and  barely takes up any space!
